PhD student in Construction Management and Building Technology – Digital twin for sustainable facility management, Creaternity Graduate School

Ref 584-2021

Luleå University of Technology is experiencing strong growth with world-leading competence in several areas of research. Our research is conducted in close collaboration with industries such as LKAB, Ericsson, Boliden, ABB, Epiroc and leading international universities. Luleå University of Technology has a total turnover of SEK 1.8 billion per year. We currently have 1 770 employees and 17 200 students.

We shape the future through innovative education and groundbreaking research. Drawing on our location in the Arctic region, we create global societal benefit.

Creaternity is an interdisciplinary research initiative to achieve the transition to a sustainable society. Creaternity Graduate School spans over many research subjects at Luleå University of Technology to create a holistic view in order to tackle the sustainability challenges. The Graduate School includes courses and other activities that will provide doctoral students with knowledge and tools to determine how the earth’s resources could be used and reused in the best way.

There is now a need to strengthen our research group Construction Management and Building Technology. With a new PhD student shall we build knowledge in how digital twins can create long-term and sustainable development for facility management. Focus for the research project is on how sensor-based systems could contribute for a circular economy with new technology for using and facility management of buildings.

The research group of Construction management and Building technology conducts research and education in the construction process - from early planning and design through construction to facility management. Our core competencies are in management and automation of the construction process as well as in industrialized construction and production systems. The research group is globally one of five leading actor in the research area and has around 30 employees. The research is applied and based on current issues in close collaboration with construction, real estate and civil engineering stakeholders; companies and other organizations.

As we strive for increased gender equality, we hope to see female applicants for the current position and welcome newly graduated applicants as well as applicants with many years of work experience.

Subject description
Construction management and Building technology includes technical solutions, tools, methods and organization for planning, information management and control of a sustainable and integrated industrial construction process with related business processes.

Project description
Within Creaternity, which is one of Luleå University of Technology's new future areas, the project, together with the state owned property manager Akademiska Hus, will provide understanding and expand knowledge of how sensor-based data together with simulated process data can contribute to long-term sustainable facility management. The PhD project is focused on identifying, following up and evaluating users 'and property managers' needs for comfort, environmental and economic effects from a life cycle perspective. The first phase of the project will include in-depth study of data structures for the building's life cycle and information standards, as well as analyzes and simulations of various business processes and measured data materials in case studies.

In the second stage, knowledge develops about how combined data sources for use and facility management can be used as a basis for developing methods that support the transformation of information along a buildings lifecycle. As the primary context for case studies, Luleå University of Technology's Campus buildings are used, starting with the existing building stock. When a new house on Campus is to be built, subsequent studies will analyze the possibility of expanded sensor-based systems to be connected to the building. The analyzes will therefore take into account the special conditions and wishes with regard to information structures and information standards as well as standards for a building's life cycle.

The PhD project is carried out in collaboration between Luleå University of Technology, Akademiska Hus as property owners and with associated construction designers, as well as other relevant actors for sustainable design and facility management.

As a PhD student, you work with a doctoral degree as the final goal after the corresponding four years of full-time doctoral education.
