The Faculty of Science and Forestry operates on the Kuopio and Joensuu campuses of the University of Eastern Finland. a Postdoctoral Researcher (Forest soil science) position, School of Forest Sciences, Joensuu Campus
We are seeking a motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join the project Seasonality of root symbioses in boreal forests, funded by the Academy of Finland. The tasks are planning, implementing and reporting experimental studies on the stress tolerance of ectomycorrhizal, arbuscular mycorrhizal and actinorhizal symbioses and their plant and microbial partners. The environmental factors under study are low and freezing temperatures, drought and limited nutrient availability. Most of the experiments will be done with tree seedlings in a unique controlled-environment facility designed for the study of effects of low and freezing temperatures, and some in the field. Laboratories in Austria and Canada participate in the project providing opportunities for visits and further training. Five percent of the working time is assigned to teaching.
The person to be appointed as postdoctoral researcher is expected to hold a doctoral degree in forest sciences, biology, environmental sciences or a related field. Experience in some of the following is considered an asset: Experimenting with plants and their symbionts; root studies; microbiological laboratory work; microscopy; chemical analyses; ecophysiological measurements; publishing in scientific journals.
The applicant is also expected to have excellent written and spoken English language skills.
The position is filled for a fixed term from 1 September 2019 to 31 May 2023. The position will be filled for a fixed term due to it pertaining to a specific project (positions of postdoctoral researcher and shall always be filled for a fixed term, UEF University Regulations, Section 31).
The salary of the postdoctoral researcher or project researcher position is determined in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities and is based on level 5 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff ( 2,935.55/ month). In addition to the job requirement component, the salary is supplemented by a personal performance component, which can be a maximum of 50% of the job requirement component.
A probationary period is applied to all new members of the staff.
