PhD Student position in Biomarker Research for Multiple Sclerosis

The Clinical Neuroimmunology group at the Department of Biomedicine, University Hospital Basel, Switzerland, invites highly motivated scientists to apply for this position within a Translational Medicine project supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation.

Your position

The project addresses the need for novel biomarkers to improve the monitoring of treatment efficacy and prediction of long-term disease course in the frame of precision medicine, and to develop them for personalized medicine. Our group is leading in the development of nerurofilament light chain (NfL) as the first blood-based biomarker to measure therapeutic efficacy of drugs, and to predict future disability in multiple sclerosis (MS).
Your tasks include

  • development and validation of new molecular markers related to MS pathogenesis
  • establishment of reference values of NfL
  • collaboration with internal and external neuroimaging groups to integrate with MRI findings and interpret biofluid marker results for MS pathology
  • collaboration in preclinical studies to elucidate the pharmacokinetics of biomarkers in view of their clinical application

Your profile

We are looking for candidates with a strong background in translational medicine and biomarker research. The project requires the ability to work in a collaborative matrix of national and international researchers, to evaluate, interpret and contextualise research data, and scientific creativity to initiate and pursue novel developments. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, a high degree of motivation and the ability to integrate in a team is prerequisite. Knowledge in Single Molecular Array technique will be an upside.

We offer you

  • a stimulating translational research environment in a leading group of biomarker research in MS
  • exposure to a collaborative research network in neuroimaging, preclinical research, statistics and epidemiology
  • candidates will have the opportunity to develop their own projects
  • access to cutting-edge technologies in biomarker research
  • salary according to the guidelines of the Swiss National Science Foundation

Application / Contact

Electronic applications (cover letter with detailed statement of research interests and experience, curriculum vita, grade transcripts, publication list and contact information of potential providers of references) should be sent to PD Dr Jens Kuhle (, Neurologic Clinic and Policlinic, University Hospital Basel, University of Basel, Petersgraben 4, CH-4031 Basel, Switzerland.
